About Us

Background / Mission
  • The Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences (APS) Emerging Technologies Focus Group (FG) established in March 2021 and aim to bring together scientists interested in the field of Emerging Technologies.
  • The FG collaborates and coordinate with other relevant organisations active in the field, with a view to reviewing current “hot topics” in the field and establishing meetings, dialogue and scientific consensus.
  • The FG provides continuing education for the membership through training symposia, focussed workshops/seminars and webinars.
  • The FG provides support to Early Career Scientists and acts as a platform for bridging the gap between industry and academia.
About the FG
The strategies and manufacturing processes for production of dosage forms, medical devices and implants, are experiencing significant advancement. New materials and manufacturing techniques are emerging with potential to address the challenges associated with the manufacture of pharmaceutical systems that will teach new tricks to old drugs and on the development of new personalised medical devices and implants. Emerging technologies (e.g., 3D printing & bioprinting, microfluidics, and BioMEMS), have the potential to produce systems that were not possible to produce a few years ago. Techniques such as 3D printing have experienced a significant price reduction making possible its use in pharmacies or hospitals for multiple applications. Other techniques such as microfluidics and BioMEMS have the potential to be used for the preparation of medical devices or drug delivery systems that adapted to the requirements of each patient. Therefore, in this focus group, we are planning to bring together researchers working in emerging technologies, such as 3D Printing, Bioprinting, Microfluidics and BioMEMS, for the manufacturing of drug delivery systems, biosensors, medical devices, and implants.

The members of the Focus Group are expected to be members of the APS

  Professor of Pharmaceutical Material Science and Technology at the School of Pharmacy of the University of East Anglia. Prof. Qi’s lab has great interests in pharmaceutical material sciences and processing. Get to know Dr Atheer Awad

  Atheer is the APS Emerging Technologies Focus Group’s Post-doc representative. Atheer received her Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy from Applied Science University in Jordan. She then pursued an MSc in Pharmaceutics at UCL School of Pharmacy, University College of London, where her research was aimed at exploring the potential of 3D printing for the formulation of abuse-deterrent and alcohol-resistant formulations. Earlier this year, she completed a PhD in Pharmaceutics at the same institution where her research was focused on fabrication of novel, bespoke pharmaceutical dosage forms using 3D printing.  Currently, Atheer is working as a Research Fellow at UCL School of Pharmacy as part of the Interreg 2 Seas Mers Zeeën project for site-specific drug delivery, looking into using 3D printing to improve colonic drug delivery.  She is one of youngest and leading researchers on the 3D printing of pharmaceuticals. Get to Know Dr Bahijja Raimi-Abraham

      I am a pharmacist and a   Lecturer/Assistant Professor in Pharmaceutics at King’s College London . Before my current position, I held positions at University College London (UCL) as an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council  (EPSRC) postdoctoral researcher and at the European Medicines Agency (EMA) as a seconded Quality National Expert.   I am the first graduate of the University of East Anglia School of Pharmacy to be awarded a PhD and was the 2018 recipient of the  Outstanding Woman in STEM Precious Award .   I lead my research group ' The Raimi-Abraham Group '. The core pillars of my research are Ageing and Global Health.
